berru is a collective of artists. They create under one name. berru’s work reflects on the intimate relationship between the human being and the machine. This relationship focuses more and more on philosophical, anthropological, political, social and ethical perspectives. Recently interested in complex and biological systems, berru is inspired by human being’s relationship with the world, to think and to create.

The work of Berru is developed around the possibility of a symbiotic relationship between nature and technology. In 2019, Berru received one of the most prestigious award in Portugal in the field of Media Art, the Sonae Media Art Prize. In the award-winning installation systems synthesis, the collective created a computing system by appropriating an existing biological system. In a few words, the sensors used and created by the collective were necessary to keep the biological system of the installation alive. They were responsible for measuring and controlling temperature, humidity, oxygen, carbon dioxide and the movement of plants’ leaves, while also generating a soundscape. Moreover, the jury acknowledged the installation’s scenic effectiveness and its ability to bring out complex concepts in a clear and attractive way to the audience. They also pointed out that the work “takes advantage of simple technological means to invoke critical aspects of our world”.

Aged under 30 years old, the three artists that form the Berru collective, founded in Porto (Portugal) in 2015, have been setting in motion a work that reflects on the intimate relationship between technology and living biological systems, ultimately leaving the human being out of the equation. Berru’s work brings forward a practical, nearly laboratorial, reflection on the Anthropocene.
